The nature of the Khumbu

Park, forests, glaciers and what lives up there.

Sagarmatha National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, 1,148 km² of high valley, glacier and forest above 2,800 m. Entry is checked at Monjo and again at the park post in Namche.

Forests and rhododendron

Between Phakding and Namche the trail runs under blue pine, birch and rhododendron. In April the hillside above Tengboche turns red and pink for a fortnight.

Glaciers and lakes

The Khumbu glacier runs from the Western Cwm to Lobuche; the Gokyo lakes, six of them above 4,700 m, are the highest freshwater lakes in the world.

Wildlife

Himalayan tahr and musk deer on the ridges, blood pheasant in the undergrowth, lammergeier and Himalayan griffon overhead, and the occasional snow leopard track above Pheriche.
